What is love asking of us?
On surveying the localised damage from a powerful Atlantic storm on the doorstep, the ego’s voice is loud: “Look at the destruction! See how vulnerable we are! See the power of chaos and the failure of our man-made structures to protect us!” After all, the storm is the ultimate symbol of the world of form: powerful, unpredictable, seemingly impersonal, and capable of immense disruption. It follows the “laws” of physics and meteorology, which appear to govern our physical security completely.
On the one hand, the damage is real, it doesn’t help to spiritualise it away. We first acknowledge the fear, we admit how frightening these forces of nature are, we try to stay safe, help neighbours, see to repairs.
But then we bring the fear to the Holy Spirit who gives us a wholly different message.
The fallen tree is not proof of a dangerous universe; it is a symbol of the impermanence of the world we made. The Life that created the tree is still whole and perfect.
· The damaged roof is not proof of vulnerability; it is a reminder that we have placed our faith in fragile shelters, while our true sanctuary is in the Mind of God, which cannot be shaken.
The power outage is a physical metaphor for the ego’s state: a loss of connection to our Source. Yet, it is in these moments of external darkness that we can choose to reconnect to the internal, unbreakable Circuit of Love…….
